St. Louis: Online gambling ballbreakers
From the BBC: The founder of London-based gaming website Betonsports has been arrested and sent to the US to answer criminal charges, US officials have said.
Gary Stephen Kaplan was arrested in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.
...
Authorities have asked that Mr Kaplan be moved to St Louis immediately or be held in custody pending a hearing to remove him to St Louis, to answer the charges against him.
...
In July last year the company's then chief executive David Carruthers was detained while changing planes in the US.
He was later sacked by the company, which subsequently decided to shut down its US business. He has been held under house arrest in St Louis since August.
I'm not sure why this started in Missouri...US Attorney Catherine Hanaway ain't playing, though.

As part of one of our group projects, we had to build a house with a base of index cards. Whoever used all their cards and had the tallest house won. We won:

Less fuckers to deal with? Bring it on!
From MSNBC/Reuters: Cuba's convalescing leader Fidel Castro wrote a scathing article on U.S. biofuel plans published in Thursday's edition of state newspaper Granma, the 80-year-old revolutionary's first editorial since his July surgery.
...
In Thursday's article Castro said more than 3 billion people in the world were condemned to die prematurely of hunger or thirst from plans by his ideological foe, the United States, to convert foodstuffs like corn into fuel for cars.
Good...I think we're overpopulated in some parts of the world anyway. And if it will rid us of shit like Castro, let's do it!

They're certainly active!
Our street and the ones immediately surrounding us have a lot of trees. It sucks at the moment, because the flower-producers are wreaking havoc on me via allergies, but the area is going to look beautiful come late spring.
With so many trees come lots of birds. I like it...there are very few trees in my parents' neighborhood, and if any birds were singing, they were drowned out by I-55.
But, having not been around so many trees for a long time, I guess I forgot how active birds can be. That, or the species we have over here are superbirds.
(No...not this Super Bird...but it certainly looks tasty, no?)
I say this because they are going all the freakin' time! Especially since the weather has warmed up over the past week or so (temps here in the past 2 weeks have been in the 70s and 80s...very unusual for March).
The first time I really noticed it was last Friday night. I went to bed about 2am, and you could hear a bunch of them just chirping away...and they're going even when I go to bed earlier. When I get up in the morning, the pigeons are up and at 'em...at first, I thought it was one of my neighbors getting it on. And as I type this, I hear some songbirds outside the living room window.
I don't mind it for the most part. Although, they were so loud when I went to bed last night/early Tuesday morning, that I turned on Music Choice to drown them out. And I'll take them over the highway any day...just got to get used to them.

The man was robbed!
As I mentioned 2 weeks ago, I finished my 10th class at school, with only the current class and my thesis to go. The instructor from that 10th class noted on my final that my overall class grade was an A.
Last night, I had to print off a copy of my schedule from my school's server. While doing so, I noticed that my grade for that 10th class was an A-. So I e-mailed the instructor to find out what was up. He apparently erred in listing my grade on the final...it should have been an A-.
I realize that this is something trivial, but it just irks the shit out of me. Oh well...it could be worse...I could be two steps from flunking out.

Always keep things in perspective
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (full story follows): A deliveryman for Imo's Pizza fatally shot near Calvary Cemetery early today has been identified as Marlin Rodgers, 32, of the 4000 block of Natural Bridge Avenue.
Police said he was shot outside his car in the 5000 block of Emerson Avenue about 12:30 a.m.
Rodgers had stopped to deliver a pizza, got out of his car, was shot, managed to get back into his vehicle and drove off, police said.
The car crossed West Florissant Avenue and crashed into a fence at Calvary Cemetery. Rodgers was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Things like this don't happen a lot in St. Louis. And this happened in a bad area on the North Side. But when I hear about shit like this, it definitely makes me think about my line of work. Hopefully I won't be doing it too much longer.

Home alone
April left this morning for a safety conference in Chicago. In doing so, she has stomped all over my heart, then carelessly shoved it back into my chest.
*ahem* :)
April and I have lived together 2 months now, and when she's not here, it's so weird. Not that I need her by my side 24/7, but when she's out of town, it's just so...weird.
Originally, I was going to go to a bunch of dive bars today and tonight...good thing I didn't. I didn't sleep much last night, so I napped this morning and this afternoon. Tim and I went up to the Leaf for a few drinks, and then I grabbed some lunch. I'll probably do some cleaning and chilling tonight...nothing too major.
April's back Tuesday...I'll probably just mope around and wait for her to get home. Goddamnit...I love her. :)

Look at it, you heartless bitch!
From MSNBC: With calls of emotional blackmail from opponents, a measure requiring women seeking abortions to first review ultrasound images of their fetuses advanced Wednesday in the South Carolina Legislature.
The legislation, supported by Republican Gov. Mark Sanford, passed 91-23 after lawmakers defeated amendments exempting rape or incest. The House must approve the bill again in a routine vote before it goes to the Senate, where its sponsor expects it to pass with those exemptions.
So...what constitutes a review? Do you have to look at it for a certain amount of time? Do you have to meditate on it after looking at it?

Talk about out of character
From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Cardinals manager Tony La Russa was jailed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department early this morning on a charge of suspicion of driving under the influence, according to a police report obtained by the Post-Dispatch.
La Russa, 62, was booked at 4:07 a.m. local time after Jupiter police conducted the traffic stop.
Wow...I would never expect anything like this out of La Russa. This will almost certainly be the biggest story in town today.

Surrealism
Tim, April and I went out to a bar in St. Peters last night. Tim and I have a friend whose wife works there, so we got cheap food and drink...and won two rounds of trivia.
St. Peters is like Oaks in Philadelphia: a booming western suburb where people are moving to to escape the City. With 51,000 residents, it's the 10th largest city in the State of Missouri. St. Charles County, MO has been growing like a weed since I was a child, and it's generally viewed as your stereotypical suburbia.
But the rednecks and country bumpkins didn't go away...they just went into hiding. And when they come out of hiding, they gather at Just One More.
We'll discuss the bar in the Chronicles. I figured that dive bars in St. Charles County were few and far between and hard to find. But this one is right in the heart of St. Peters, just off Interstate 70. And this place is indeed a dive.
We had fun, but given that St. Peters is a half-hour away from us, it's not going to be a regular trek.

Bosnians--the new niggers
Here's an interesting story from Sunday's St. Louis Post-Dispatch regarding the Bosnian community and their love of smoking.
You'd swear by the way some people (including my family and friends) talk that Bosnians are the new niggers. Never mind that they've essentially saved a neighborhood in South City, helped stop the decline of several others, saved a school district in nearby Affton and introduced us to a new culture. Never mind that they're peaceful Muslims that take care of their property and respect others and their property.
Nope...they're just weird-looking people that talk funny, eat weird stuff and don't speak English.
Why do some people have such a hard time accepting people that have some differences than them? In the end, we all have more in common than we don't.

This is a sign on one of the washers at the laundromat I go to:

I have derived a great deal of joy from this image...and I'm not sure why. I already know I'm easily amused, but this is just too fucking funny to me.

They're stealing more jobs!
In a couple of Chinese restaurants that I've been to recently, I've noticed that they employ Latinos...the ones I saw last night were cleaning, but one of them might have been cooking as well.
This got the rat going on the wheel...why Latinos? Easy availability in the labor pool? The ability to pay them less because they're illegal? The owners couldn't get any more family or friends to work in the restaurant? The owners want to blend in better?
There's also a guy I work with at the pizza shop, who used to deliver for a Chinese restaurant...and he's white.
I'm all for equality, but I just found this very interesting...very rarely do I see or meet anyone employed at a Chinese restaurant that is not Chinese (or at least Asian).
Maybe my little city isn't so backwards, after all.

The only man at...
...the bra shop...
April needed to get some new bras today, and due to her cup size, she gets them at a specialty store in the suburbs. So after eating lunch at one of the new Chipotles in town, we headed over to the shop.
I sat there for over an hour while April tried on 25 different bras...she was having a difficult time finding one that would truly fit her. And for most of that time, I was the only guy there. Finally, shortly before we left, a couple of guys came in with their pregnant wives/significant others.
I didn't mind waiting, but it was just weird being the only guy in there for the most part. And I wonder how the women felt about having a guy in there. They probably didn't feel as weird as I did...it's not like I could see any of them trying anything on. But for all they knew, I could have been the neighborhood pervert. Which I am...but in my own neighborhood. And at least they had a TV in there that had college basketball on.
It's a small price to pay to have those beautiful boobies in my face every day. ;)

Last week, I finished my 10th Masters class...Quality Management. Got another A. That's 9 A's and one A-...not too shabby.
This week, we started our last class before our thesis...Business Strategy. It's basically a 6-week class where we plot the course of an imaginary company. All online...no book reading or paper tests. Love it.
Almost done...I'm ready to go...

Fire! Fire! part 6
I got home from work around 9:30 last night, and sat down to a delicious dinner of homemade empanadas. I put just a little Tabasco on them, and began to eat.
I then experienced one of the most adverse reactions I've ever had to anything. Almost immediately, my mouth and lips began to burn...it was incredibly painful. After several glasses of water, two pieces of bread and eating three chunks of ice over a half-hour, the pain finally subsided.
A short time later, I ate an empanada without Tabasco...no problem. What the fuck was that about?!
Normally, Tabasco is hot to me, but nothing like this has ever happened before. And I've been using this bottle of Tabasco for a couple of months now. So, the only thing I can think of is this: I'm currently taking the antibiotic Doxycycline. With such a medicine, you can be more susceptible to sunburn. Though regular Tabasco is not incredibly hot on the Scovill scale, I suspect that my skin is more susceptible to its heat than normal, hence the intense reaction I had.
It seems like a stretch, but it's the only reasonable explanation I have.

I love me some π
Today is Pi Day, as in the Greek letter that is also the mathematical constant used in determining the circumference of a circle.
Pi (π) to 50 decimal places is 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510. This website figures it out to a million places...that's just nuts!
Incidentally, it's also Genius Day and the birthday of Albert Einstein.
Now if you'll excuse me...I feel like hell and these high-falutin concepts we're talking about are making my head hurt even more.

Laverne/L2
Good afternoon, folks!
Meet Laverne, the 2001 Toyota RAV4 L 4WD that we purchased last week and received yesterday:

Look! A moonroof! Nice!

What's up with this gay-ass spoiler?

A combo CD-cassette setup...for all those cassettes that we never play:

A little cargo net...this will be useful:

A lap belt for the bitch position...that's safety consciousness!

Like its predecessor, Laverne was built at a Toyota plant in Tahara, Japan and made its way to the United States in 2000 or 2001, settling in Kansas City, MO. After 6 years there, it was purchased at an auto auction and wound up at Twin City Toyota in Festus, MO (a suburb 35 miles S of the City). The dealership had just received the car, and it had to be detailed and tweaked out before we could take delivery. April went down there Wednesday to pay for it, and she received it at work yesterday.
Laverne is a nice little car. 2001 was the beginning of the 2nd generation RAV4, and it looks sharper than the 1st generation. In addition, it has a more powerful engine and feels bigger inside. And Laverne has 4WD...we did not have that on the Lesbianmobile, though it was an option on the 1st gen models.
It feels more comfortable to drive than the old one--I fit better in it. And I like the increased room (though I don't know if it really is bigger). And it handles better than the old one, probably due to the combination of an updated model and 4WD.
Laverne's nickname is L2...she is the second Lesbianmobile April has owned, and the second item in the family named Laverne. April's mom and sister recently took in a stray cat that they have named Laverne.
May Laverne give us many years and miles of driving pleasure...and may I not wreck this one while delivering pizzas!

Ya think Catholics run my school?
Good morning, peeps! I am back in the motherfucking house...you can all stop talking shit now. :)
A recent sign on the front door of Fontbonne's library:

I thought it was funny when I first saw it. Then April reminded me that Fontbonne is sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet...the sisters will be celebrating their patron saint next Monday.
St. Joseph's Day is not a particularly huge Catholic feast day...kinda medium. We used to get the day off in grade school, but I don't remember having it off in high school. Doesn't really affect me here though...I have class on Thursdays. We normally have study team on Mondays, but we move the day on occasion anyway...we'll probably meet Tuesday instead.

Poor Ciberbosque...
April decided to have some fun at my expense while I was taking a break from posting...what a silly goose!
Syc has neglected you.... It seems he has rekindled his romance with the Cellar and has forgotten about you
I still visit everyday to see how you are. Hang in there Bosque baby, Syc will tire of his little fling and come running back to you.
Hang in there and be patient

McCain
So, John McCain is in the for the presidential race...not a surprise.
Here's a surprise, though: If he's elected president, he would be the oldest elected president ever, at 72...Reagan was 70 when he was sworn in. He doesn't seem that old though, much like Reagan didn't seem that old. Although, Reagan was a folksy turd that kinda gave his age away.
McCain is trying to pander to the meat-and-potato conservatives right now, but I really don't think he's one of them. He's an Arizona Republican, and they seem to be from the same cloth as the Republicans in New England. Plus, he's not attending the Conservative Political Action Conference this weekend, which seemed to hurt Michelle Malkin's feelings (story).
I don't think he's gonna win the nomination...but he'll certainly make it interesting.

I paid $16 for...
...these:

Two sets of them, actually...that's how they're sold.
GM calls the sets a "stop kit." What are they for?
Each set holds a seat belt buckle in place, so that it doesn't fall down to the floor:

I broke the drivers side set a few weeks ago...I closed the car door on the seat belt. After rigging it for a couple of weeks (a tied rubber band, a small binder clip), I thought it would be a good idea to just buy a new set. We're probably going to sell Barbie in the fall or spring, so I'm trying to fix the cosmetic issues that she has.
16 fucking dollars for four small pieces of plastic. I could have went to the junkyard, but no guarantee of success. And based on how they work, I probably wouldn't have been able to get a good set off a junker. And Ms. Car Seat Expert said a new set would be good to maximize the functionality of the seat belt. :)
I wonder how much it would have cost to replace the similar item on the Accord.
